“Graduating U of M students showcase
ambitious, promising new work in annual exhibition
Bright futures”
“Jean E. Yang memorializes a South Korean ferry disaster that claimed the lives of 325 high school students, a national tragedy and outrage. Life-size portraits depict a drowning student, a grieving mother and the disgraced ship captain. In an accompanying installation, a bank of lockers appears to sink beneath the surface of the concrete floor. Yang balances realism and expressiveness, high emotion and sober handling to viscerally communicate shock and loss.”
